Could House Speakership Drama Derail Trump 2024?

A representative from Texas announced that he will move to formally nominate former President Donald Trump as next Speaker of the House.

Representative Troy Nehls, a Republican from Texas, issued a statement of his intent Tuesday night following Representative Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster.

“This week, when the U.S. House of Representatives reconvenes, my first order of business will be to nominate Donald J. Trump for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives,” Nehls said.

“President Trump, the greatest President of my lifetime, has a proven record of putting America First and will make the House great again.”

The Speaker of the House is not legally required to be a sitting member of Congress, though there is no historical precedent for someone in the role not being a member.

Representative Greg Steube, a Republican from Florida, also said he would back Trump as the new Speaker in a post on X.

Trump has previously said that he would not be interested in the job. Before Republicans took back the House in the 2022 midterms, he said in March, “No, I think that it’s not something I wanted. A lot of people bring it up. It’s brought up all the time.”

“No, it’s not something I want to do. I want to look at what’s happening, and then we’re going to be doing something else. No, it’s not something I would be interested in.”

McCarthy Replacement Rumors Swirl

McCarthy said he would not attempt to become Speaker again after he was voted out on Tuesday.

He also said he would have to “look at” remaining in Congress at all following the crushing defeat.

The GOP will hold a candidate forum next Tuesday where they will select a new member for the role, which is currently being temporarily filled by Patrick McHenry of North Carolina.

One of his first acts was to order Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi to vacate the hideaway office so he could take it over.

“This eviction is a sharp departure from tradition,” Pelosi said. “As Speaker, I gave former Speaker Hastert a significantly larger suite of offices for as long as he wished.”
